Rob Van Vuuren, Khanyiso Kenqa and Phil De Lange for Hermanus Comedy Club

There has been a comedic revolution in South Africa and it’s found it’s way to Hermanus! Each month, local comedian Barry Hilton arranges for Cape Town’s hottest comedy talent to come and perform in Hermanus. Last month’s sold out show featuring Kagiso Mokgadi, Yaaseen Barnes and Phil de Lange was a raging success. This month’s lineup features comedy heavy weight Rob van Vuuren as the headline act, Khanyiso Kenqa as support and back by popular demand, Phil De Lange as open mic.

The Sunday night performance will be held once again at The Class Room, situated in the Wine Village, Sandbaai.

“Because South Africans need a reason to laugh and not to cry, comedy has really taken off in this country,” says Barry Hilton. “With escalating crime, an economic downturn, political instability, general depression and conflict every which way you turn, people need comedic relief. I make it my business to make people laugh and it’s turned out to be a wonderfully exciting business which I’ve been doing for more than 30 years.”

“Getting into comedy is never easy and staying in demand is even more challenging, the tidal wave of competition is tougher than you can imagine,” adds Barry who through the Hermanus Comedy Club is doing his bit to give comedians another platform. When he started out as a comedian more than three decades ago, his mentor encouraged him to someday share his experience with other comedians and to offer a helping hand where possible. True to his word, Barry has always been very accessible and open to comedians and frequently offers advice, opportunities and help. “The implementation of the Hermanus Comedy Club has not only offered comedians another outlet for their talents but is also exposing the locals in our town to comedy in a brand new way and I’m thrilled to be doing so,” says Barry.

Tickets for the show which starts at 18:00 on Sunday, 15 May are R80 and can be obtained by calling 076 421 1813 or 083 270 3590 or visiting Nou Gaan Ons Braai (Opposite Oskars Restaurant) Stall 32, Market Square Stalls, Central Business District, Hermanus. There will be no door sales, please note that seating is UNRESERVED. Easy-eating meals and a full bar will be on offer.
